VT FlagshipMeiko UK had the perfect solution in the form of its Microvac high vacuum food waste system when the Royal Navy wanted to install a sustainable kitchen at its training site in Hampshire.

Meiko UK is in the vanguard of the battle to manage kitchen food waste sustainably with the revolutionary Microvac vacuum system. Two groundbreaking 'green' waste disposal installations for the Royal Navy are a first in the cost sector and a benchmark for other large operations fighting to reduce waste, avoid landfill costs, streamline operations and save the environment - all at the same time.

VT Flagship, under the umbrella of parent company VT Education and Skills, has a unique partnering agreement with the Royal Navy to deliver bespoke training solutions, facilities management and construction services.

HMS Collingwood at Fareham, Hampshire, close to Portsmouth's historic naval dockyard, is the fourth 'vessel' to bear the name and is the land based leading establishment of the Maritime Warfare School (MWS) - the largest naval training organisation in Western Europe. The closure of HMS Dryad led to some training elements being relocated to HMS Collingwood: as prime contractor for what was named 'Project Warspite' VT Flagship Training's challenge was to construct a world class training facility including a state of the art catering facility to feed up to 1200 people, three times a day from 06.30 to 11 pm.

"The brief from the Royal Navy Estates Organisation was for a sustainable kitchen," says Kevin Ayton VT Flagship Training's Catering and Pay As You Dine Business Development Manager. "The Navy is committed to sustainability and any new build has to conform to BREEAM. When the building was finished, we basically had an empty shell that had to be filled, coordinated and integrated to align with the construction process, and in accordance with the guidelines set out in the Joint Services Publication for planning kitchens - with a budget in excess of £1million. Part of that included a sustainable, high volume, kitchen food waste disposal system. We approached David C Clark FCSI of CDIS-KARM to advise, design, and specify the kitchen equipment."

As any caterer knows, food waste is notoriously difficult to dispose of. Disposal into drainage systems can lead to vermin infestation and blockages, along with the inherent cost of repairs, waste food is also bulky, and quickly builds-up in container bins waiting for waste collection. It is unhygienic, has an awful stench, and involves kitchen staff hauling bags from one location to another. Frequent waste collection is expensive. The availability of landfill sites are under pressure, and are known to significantly contribute towards climate change and global warming by the emission of CO2 and methane gases.

"The solution had to be sustainable, from an environmental perspective, easy to operate from the user's perspective, and cost effective from the owner's perspective. Such a solution comes in the form of Meiko's Microvac high vacuum food waste removal system," says Clark.
