THE LANGHAM HOTEL & MEIKO GO STRATOSPHERIC WITH FIVE-STAR WASTE SYSTEM
There was no question of the Langham having anything but the latest food waste removal system within the kitchen of the recently opened Landau Restaurant, so naturally the Microvac food waste system from Meiko was selected. The hotel takes its commitment to sustainability and improving the environment very seriously - two of the reasons the Langham found the idea of installing Microvac so attractive. Food waste smells, it's dirty and if you don't handle it properly you can attract flies, maggots and rodents. But there's no such problem with the Microvac system. It's a one way, fully enclosed waste removal system. Microvac breaks down the amino acids, considerably reducing the acidity (the pH level) of the food, and with a 3-4PH level, micro organisms cannot survive - hence no smell. Inlets can be placed within the kitchen (as they are in the Langham). Once food waste is in the inlet it is not touched again by human hand as it travels through the 96m long transfer pipe to the storage tank, which at the Langham is located within the loading bay area. A tanker vehicle uses a collection point similar to a fire hydrant at the exterior of the building to extract the waste for disposal. At the Langam, the emptying pipe has been positioned some 30m away from the tank at a collection point convenient to the hotel so that waste can be taken away without interfering with any hotel deliveries.
