THE LANGHAM HOTEL & MEIKO GO STRATOSPHERIC WITH FIVE-STAR WASTE SYSTEM
Page of 2
Transport and disposal costs are predictable. With some London councils charging £1.25 for a food waste sack that only carries up to 8kg (about eight litres), the Langham's savings are considerable. Another hotel in central London is spending approximately £600 a month on plastic bags!

Whilst most of the waste goes for composting, another site using Microvac is transferring the food waste to a bio-gas plant located in North Devon which produces methane for sale to the national grid. The gas can also be used to run some vehicles and may earn end users green points for the energy they consume. Quite simply, Microvac can achieve stratospheric levels of green approval.

Comment from Langham Hotel spokesperson on Meiko's Microvac installation:

"In our conscious and continuous desire to encourage recycling and the management of waste, we chose the Meiko Microvac to further enhance our efforts in sorting, disposing and the management of waste at the hotel.

With the recent installation of the Microvac , food waste from all kitchens and dish wash clearing areas, collection receptacles are now used to easily collect all food waste from the preparation stage through to the plate clearing stage and dispose of this waste through the Microvac system.

The system has the advantages of improved sanitation, while minimizing the effect of our food waste on the environment in a safe, sustainable and benign way with Anaerobic Digestion and the generation of Biogas. We also believe that the financial advantages from reduced regular waste disposal collections will more than offset the capital investment."

Comment from Langham Hotel spokesperson on Meiko's Engineering:

"We found Meiko to be most helpful in assisting us with our current refurbishment works in respect of dishwashing and were delighted that their interests in food waste disposal coincided with our own wish to attain a higher level of waste management.

The installation of the plant has gone smoothly and the delivery and commissioning of equipment has met with the programming and ease of installation as described to us by Managing Director Mr B Downie.

The Meiko management have taken a great amount of time to oversee the installation and have been in regular contact to attain feedback from the customer throughout the works. They should therefore be complimented on their client interactions from sales through to final commissioning.

The operation of the equipment to date has proven to be very easy for the stewarding department and they have found that the equipment has immediately addressed their food waste clearing issues. Therefore providing this essential support department with a clean working environment as the vacuum system minimises waste build up and as previously carried out the manhandling of the waste to areas outside of their working specific work zone has been eliminated."
